Takeaway: The FDA and FTC are yet to clear their stance on CBD, but they are regulating the existing market of CBD. On 7th April, the FDA and FTC sent warning letters to many companies on grounds that they were making false claims. These companies issued advertisements claiming to cure diseases like Alziemers and Cancer. Although consistent studies have shown that CBD is beneficial in slowing growth and aiding the modern treatment’s side effects. By law the FDA prohibits any CBD manufacturer to advertise misleading facts until FDA approves these.
On Tuesday (3rd April), the FDA and FTC sent warning letters to companies selling CBD with false claims. The reported false claims are about treating diseases such as Cancer and Alzheimer.
According to news, the warning letters are addressed to the product advertisement mentioning the product as a primary cure for treating particular diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, fibromyalgia, and neuropsychiatric disorders. However, we all know that CBD is legal in the USA. Some of us even already used it to treat elderly-related disease. Furthermore, it used to work well.
In this article, we are going to discuss whether CBD is still safe to use or not. Even if the FDA warning letters arose on false medical claims, does that mean CBD does not work? What are the actual benefits of CBD? We will also further discuss which one is the truth and which one is just a lie.
Does CBD work for Cancer?
Scientific evidence shows that cannabinoids in marijuana slow the growth of cancer. It inhibits the formation of new blood cells that feed a tumor and help cope with pain, fatigue, nausea, and other side effects.
It is neither everything is magical, nor everything is wrong. The studies that have been carried out until now on the effects of cannabis on cancer cells conducted in animals or cells grown in laboratories. However, satisfactory results have been obtained, which is why many people have opted to experiment with marijuana and its derivatives as a complement to their regular therapies in the treatment of cancer.
There is research that has shown that different cannabinoids exert effects that inhibit the growth of cancer cells. The death of tumor cells without healthy cells are being affected (apoptosis). The inhibition of metastasis and the reduction of the formation of tumors shows the result after the appearance of new blood vessels. In addition to this, there are also positive effects on sleep disorders, loss of appetite, nausea, anxiety, and depression, which may be side effects of cancer.
That is why more and more cancer patients are approaching marijuana, seeking solutions to the side effects of the treatments they are subjected to and hoping to experience the anti-tumor benefits. Some of the possible positive results are:
- Antitumor activity
According to animal studies, observation says that cannabinoids can affect cancer cells. They also avoid inflammation of the colon so that they could reduce the risk of colon cancer. In the specific case of THC, it maintains these same effects in lung cancer and breast cancer cells.
- Appetite stimulation
One of the significant problems of cancer are the enormous side effects of the treatments that must be done to overcome the disease. Chemotherapy takes devastating consequences, and one of them can be a mainly complete loss of appetite.
Many studies have concluded that cannabis increases the desire to eat. It also helps to improve caloric intake. In this case, thanks to the THC. It counteracts with drug properties which loss the appetite. This can be an essential ally during cancer treatment.
- Relief of pain
Among the cannabinoids with greater effect demonstrated for the treatment of pain, cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG), as its action directly affects the points where the pain is originating, acting as an analgesic and soothing.
Cancer, although it is not talked about much, is a painful disease. The constant affections that it generates cause different pains and a complete indisposition. Cannabis can help in this case, since it has analgesic properties that serve as a treatment in fibromyalgia, and also in the consequences of cancer.
- Nausea and vomiting
Another of the terrible effects of chemotherapy are nausea and, inevitably, vomiting. Again, THC, despite being a psychoactive component, is mainly beneficial in the inhibition of nausea, even those generated by chemotherapy.
The contribution in this matter is such that the National Cancer Institute of the United States highlights the fruit of the research that has become the consideration of THC as an ally in the reduction of vomiting in chemotherapy patients. Again, cannabis is planted as an aid in dealing with the most harmful effects of this disease.
CBD is not a primary treatment for cancer. However, it is useful to minimize the side effect involved after consuming cancer drugs and prevent tumor cell’s growth. Unfortunately, the CBD marketers who have got FTC warning letters on Tuesday, 3rd April stated that CBD could heal cancer as primary medicine.
Does CBD Work for Alzheimer?
The tetrahydrocannabinol contained in marijuana can protect against Alzheimer’s and prevent the loss of brain cells, revealed a new German study in mice.
The research, presented during the meeting of the Society of Neuroscience in San Diego, used several mice for six weeks to which they submitted a memory test. A part of the animals received a synthetic form of tetrahydrocannabinol, and the rest received a placebo.
The second group lost the ability to remember where the shallowest place was in a puddle of water, while those who consumed the substance derived from marijuana lost fewer brain cells and presented up to 20 percent fewer protein plaques related to Alzheimer’s.
The scientists pointed out that, according to these results, marijuana could be beneficial to treat Alzheimer’s syndrome.
CBD prevents Alzheimer disease and effectively treat the syndrome. However, there is not enough scientific proof that CBD can be used as a standalone therapy for Alzheimer.
Can I use marijuana if I am receiving chemotherapy? The answer is yes, and, in fact, cannabis in cancer is used mainly to combat many side effects from the application of chemotherapy.
Chronic pain, inflammation, insomnia, anxiety and especially lack of appetite are symptoms generated mainly by chemotherapy and cancer treatment in general. The role of cannabis, in this case, is a companion, acting as a natural aid to alleviate the inevitable consequences of strong but necessary chemotherapy treatment.
What hopes are there in the anti-tumor properties of CBD?
Some scientists have analyzed how cannabinoids such as CBD interact in conjunction with other drugs and treatments and combined with chemotherapy. From these studies, it is clear that CBD alone is a very good antitumor and that it can also enhance the effect of synthetic drugs, to reduce the toxic dose while obtaining the best result.
This is why CBD has been seen as a hope to represent a non-toxic therapy that can work in certain types of cancer (but not all types of cancer). Besides, it could serve without the additional side effects of chemotherapy, which tend to cause indiscriminate damage to the brain and the rest of the body.
